Jonathan was born 10th June 1982 in Rutherglen, Scotland. He spent his whole life living in East Kilbride where he had many friends. He attended at Canberra Primary in the Westwood area and Hunter High in the Calderwood area. During his years at Canberra he was a keen and active member of the Boys Brigade where he attained many medals and trophies. Such is the strength of Jonathan’s personality he is still remembered fondly by those who attended with him, even though he had lost touch with many of them. In his years at Hunter High he found his first love, the guitar. He spent many hours at home and at the Key Youth Centre playing his guitar. He even managed to form a band with his best friend Brian. Known as ‘Give us a light’ I am reliably informed that they were actually very good, though the only time I heard them play they didn’t manage to get through a single song. Fortunately, I did get many opportunities to hear Jonathan play his guitar and am eternally grateful that he was also interested in electronics and recording as he left behind a recording so we don’t just have to remember his playing we can hear it via the recording on this site. His love of anything technical and gadgety lead him to take a course in music and electronics at Coatbridge College. He later decided that music should remain a hobby and took courses on software development at South Lanarkshire College. Throughout his years at college he supported himself by working as a barman at the Village Inn. He worked and studied full time so that he could share his life with his girlfriend Lynne in their own flat, just like a proper grown-up couple, even though it would have been more prudent to wait. He helped to support Lynne through 8 years of university, something she is very grateful for. Even if he didn’t understand half of what she went on about most of the time he always listened. And he did live to see her leave university and get a ‘proper’ job, for which he was thankful! It wouldn’t have been possible without his love and support. After attaining qualifications in software development Jonathan found a job as an IT ‘receptionist’ at Arnold Clark. Jonathan always believed in himself and his talents which allowed him to progress quickly though his career. It was not long before he had talked himself in to a software developer position and from there he was able to move in to a better job at West Lothian Council where he had a software developer and I.T. support position. Finally, he managed to find the perfect software development job at Global Energy. Not only was he to get a substantial pay rise but he was working with like-minded people in an expanding company. Even though Jonathan only worked for GE for 6 days he had already built shelves (they moved offices on his first day), written a report far beyond the required and expected standards and made friends. On a personal level Jonathan was no less ambitious. Having moved to Aberdeen six months previously Lynne had not looked into houses assuming that getting the deposit together was the most important thing. As usual Jonathan had other ideas. By the time he joined Lynne in Aberdeen he knew what area of Aberdeen he wanted to live in, what kind of house they should get and had even spotted one or two online that would do just nicely thank you very much! Not satisfied with that he also had plans to build his own house at some point in the future, though only if they could afford it after the kids came along. More immediately, the night before he was taken from us he planted many seeds and had already picked out the ‘greenhouse’ in B & Q for his practically-mother-in-law's back garden. He would stay if he had to but he was having his garden and his computers and TV. He is the only person I know who could be happy with a 42 inch TV in the bedroom but wonder if it still needed surround sound speakers. He was never one for doing anything by half. Everything was done with enthusiasm, exuberance and such joy that you couldn’t help but smile when with him. Whether he was salsa dancing, figuring out a complicated computer program or working out a new song on his guitar, he never gave up, he never gave in. He was taken too soon, he had so much to still to give. I do not wish that he rests in peace, that’s not his style. I wish that he is rocking the joint out wherever he is, that he’s showing them his salsa moves and splatting zombies and monsters with a JD in hand. Live forever my love.
