The Flat

2004 July - 2009 February

Jonathan's parents found out that he was really moving out when one weekend in April 2004 Lynne asked if he totally objected to living in Hamilton because it was cheaper (he did by the way). In the May of 2004 Lynne's Mum found them a flat in Burns Park Calderwood and became their landlady. This might explain why they ended up living so close to his parents and so far away from hers! On 9th July 2004 Jonathan moved all his things in to the flat almost filling up one room. On the 10th Lynne moved in her stuff almost filling up the flat. Having been a couple for five years and being the grand old age of 22 they thought they knew it all. They were young and in love, what could go wrong? Well, Lynne doesn't do housework, just physics. And Jonathan is a neat freak. So there were some inevitable words said, and a door or two slammed but nothing serious and overall a very happy 5 years was spent in that not so wee flat. The first thing Jonathan did was to paint the hall. He was not living in a flat with a lime green hall. To help he invited Brian over, Brian seemed confused over the paint as he was sure beer had been mentioned but mucked in anyway and was rewarded with food and beer. Lynne made the food and fetched the beer, painting is not physics. DIY is another story though, Lynne does do DIY, except she wasn't allowed to. It seemed every time a man appeared at the flat they'd hardly been inside two minutes before they had a beer in one hand and a screwdriver in the other; this explains a lot about the furniture in the flat. Lessons were learnt along the way, not least if you give Lynne a paint brush she will paint the wall, and herself and any pieces of furniture that happen to be lying about, thank goodness Jonathan didn't mind painting! He was also responsible for building all the bedroom furniture, causing much amusement when Del and he realised they had build a floor to ceiling wardrobe on its side and had to take it to pieces and re-build it up-right. Fortunately, there was lots of beer so no harm done. Another mainstay of the flat was the many balcony BBQs. Protected by the fact the balcony was set in to the building more than one BBQ was held whilst it was raining: thus developed a tradition of BBQ-ing in the spring, summer and autumn. It seemed there was always a beer in their fridge and a space on the sofa for any passing friends, who usually brought more beer! Latterly Jonathan developed his cocktail skills practicing on any one who stood still in the flat for long enough. He became a master of the mojito and margarita, not to mention the odd strawberry daiquiri! So having been given a month by most people, (and probably less by anyone who’d lived with Lynne!) Jonathan thrived in his own place. He even managed to get Lynne to do housework occasionally, proving that he could indeed work miracles.
